HMS DAUNTLESS Sea Ride
On 29 April 2010, 3 Midshipman from Trojan Squadron were given the opportunity to join HMS DAUNTLESS for the transit from Edinburgh to Newcastle.
HMS DAUNTLESS is the second of the new Type 45 class destroyers to be built. The Ship is affiliated to the City of Newcastle and the Squadron members were joined by other city representatives including the Lord Mayor and Mayoress as well as members of affiliated Army and RAF units.
Day 1: We joined the Ship mid morning and after being given time to settle in were given a tour of the weapon systems and ops room. Once at sea the guests were shown the capabilities of the ship as it was put through a series of manoeuvres to shows its excellent speed and handling. This was followed by a test firing of the ship's miniguns at the "killer tomato" target. The rest of the day was spent experiencing various events onboard, including a charity row covering the distance of Edinburgh to Newcastle by the Marine Engineering Department and a Ship’s Quiz in the evening.
Day 2: After a thankfully calm night the Ship came alongside at Northumbria Quay. Throughout this evolution we were situated on the bridge in order to witness how the manoeuvre was controlled. Once alongside, we were joined by 7 other members of the Squadron and given a comprehensive tour of the Ship. These 2 days were an excellent way to witness the manner in which a warship operates, thereby gaining a further invaluable insight into our future careers.
